The relation with Barbiel is something very special. In the beginning, she was nothing more than his adviser for him. For a woman she is very high-ranked. Just like Raphael, is she one of the Virtuosuses. She works with Raphael in his surgery as head nurse. Barbiel is always loyal to Raphael. Later in the story you see how much she cares really about him. When Raphael has to give Sara something to drink that steals her voice, she get kidnapped. Sevortharte seems to know that Raphael cares much about Sara and without a hostage he would never do such a thing. Sevi showed him a photo of Barbiel beeing captured. On this picture Raphael saw her ring, which she has still from the military. In this ring is a very long needle and the first thought he has about Barbiel: Will she commit suicide? From this moment on he is always in sorrow about her. So Raphael went to Sara short before the trial begins and gave her this special drink so that she loses her voice. But after this, Sevi has another mission for Raphael to keep him away from the trial. He has to join Mika and look for demons, they shouldn't interupt the trial. To make sure Raphael doesn't do anything other than Sevi told him, he sents one of the White Guards with him. While Raphael is flying to the meeting point with Michael, Barbiel escapes. She used her ring to make her look as if she killed herself. Her guards came in and were shocked and she used this moment to get free and drove away. She phones Raphael, to tell him she escaped and that she's ok. You see how reliefed Raphael is when he heard this. Barbiel even brings Raphael up, who, except her would look over his womanizing... and that she hopes that he didn't do more than kissing this woman by his side. He answers nothing after that, he just says that it pleases him not to have lost such an excellent second-incommand. Maybe you think he is a little bit cold to Barbiel, he didn't say that he pleased that she herself is alive... but Barbiel knows him very well and I think she knows how he meant this. Barbiel sends him then her location and Raphael kills his guard and flys to her. When he see Bearbiel, he even runs to her and hugs her a little bit. The way she smiles at him is a special smile. You only use this way of smiling if you like the person very much. However she kows about how much Raphael cares about Sara and make him realize this. When he is leaving back to the trial, she says 'Do whatever your heart tells you! I will stand by you wherever it takes you!' I think this two senctences show how much she cares and how much she loves Raphael. It is not easy for her. She knows he loves Sara and not her, but she only wants that he is happy. I think if Kaori would draw a picture of Barbiel after Raphael drove away, Barbiel would cry a little bit... even when she is usually a very strong woman. I think at this point Raphael loves her also, but he don't see it, he was so focused on Sara. But then it happend: Barbiel died for him. It happened when Sandalphon was in Sara's body and mind and tried to kill Raphael. Barbiel throws herself before him and died in his stead. Then he suddenly realized that he loved her and that she loved him all the time. She accepted all the bad things of him, the whole affairs. She did all for him and he saw her as a mother or sister, but then he knew better. He was angry about himself. He revived her with all his power. Raphael knew that he could die when he does this, but this didn't care him. And so she lives now and Raphael has to rest about 10 years. But I think she will wait for him and the two will be happy. Just like Sleeping Beauty.
